Jamie Payne is a recent graduate of Rhodes College, in Memphis. Before the pandemic his work revolved around personal anxieties about illness and bodily failure.
As the world began to experience shared anxieties about a foreign entity attacking the body, his video and audio work transformed to describe contrasting feelings of calmness and anxiety. There is calmness in the repetition of our actions as days bleed into each other. Calmness grows as the understanding of the virus grows. There is anxiety in the unknown, the possibility of sickness caused by an unseeable force. He uses sound and video to create lulling, slow events that depict alternating moments of rest and aggressive fear of the unknown.
